There are a very wide range of mature communications technologies covering three main areas: two-way 'wire-based' communication, including cable and fixed-wire telecommunications networks; a wide range of two-way 'wireless' communications technologies covering different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, and 'broadcast' technologies covering analogue and digital satellite and terrestrial one-way transmission.
WiMax and LTE (Long Term Evolution) are shaping up as competitors to dominate the next generation of high speed data services for mobile customers. Although their origins are both in OFDM, these two emerging technologies are being promoted by rival camps aiming to establish the next industry standard.
