Despite the phenomenal growth in mobile communications services delivered over a variety of networks and technologies, 'fixed wire' services delivered over wires and cables still play an important role in most countries, particularly in the delivery of broadband services.
Telefónica is paying €802m ($1.15bn) for 5.7 per cent of China Netcom, which gives it a significant stake in the company created by the merger of China’s second fixed-line group with mobile operator China Unicom.
